Project Outline

The client consulted the Planning Team at WS having used a different consultant who were unable to achieve permission with the original application, so WS took on this project at the Appeal stage. The application was refused as the Council deemed the proposal unsympathetic to the neighbouring Ifield Village Conservation Area and that the two-storey side extension, due to its size, would be negatively visually imposing.

The Planning Team compiled a comprehensive argument; that the proposal was of a high quality of design which was in-keeping to the terrace it was a part of, and would provide sufficient space between the extension and neighbouring properties, as not to impose on the adjacent Conservation Area.

This compelling case saw the Appeal allowed by Crawley Borough Council in 2019.

COMMENTS

Conservation Areas require developments to be in-keeping with the character of the area and to uphold the revered and protected architectural design standards of the area. As this project neighboured the border of Ifield Village Conservation Area, there were standards that needed upholding as not to detract any quality or character from the Conservation Area.
