This project involved an extensive redevelopment and additional extensions either side of the original building to create what is now a striking and artistically creative home. Sited on the Webb Estate the build had to follow the ‘Garden First’ principle which presents strict guidelines for both housing and landscaping in the area. The existing building was considered to contribute positively to the conservation site so was maintained and built upon, completed with regard to the character. The asymmetry in the dwellings elevation preserves the modest ‘arts and crafts’ form seen throughout Webb’s historic estate, creating a highly visual and striking home without masking the historical relevance of the underlying home.

The scheme is deeply considered and as such, takes into consideration the existing significance of the wider heritage asset comprising the conservation area. The design approach has also drawn on advice set out within the Local Plan, which states that Croydon will promote the use of heritage assets and local character as a catalyst for regeneration and cohesion and to strengthen a sense of place. It is therefore demonstrable that the proposed redevelopment of the property both respects and reflects characteristics within the locale, whilst ensuring that original features are retained – therefore consolidating the existing sense of place.
